Thanks, Robert. That got rid of them.
I'm aware of the automatic first line indent, but I'm in the habit of using the Tab key to indent--old dog and all that. But I find that with the uninvited tabs removed, I can easily change the tabbed indent of the entire documetn to what I want.

Rogue Tabs
I'm using version 1.6.1.9. When I open a new document (in any format but text), it opens with tabs at .01, .51, and 3.51. Default tab is .50. This is a pain, for once a document is created with these tabs, changing indents is a mess. While I can delete them before creating the document, I'd rather ...

Originally, I wanted to change the entire document from 0.5" first line indent to 0.25" to better simulate a published novel (for feedback reads). Part of the document complied, part remained at 0.5", and part went crazy. I assume this was because there was a tab at 3.51" in places, which was for ...

There are .5" tabs in parts of the document and no tabs in other parts (I manually indent.) I solved the problem as far as this document is concerned. On an impulse I opened it in Word, set the first line indent to .25" and it worked. But when I open the document in Atlantis, I start having problems ...

First Line Indent
I'm trying to change the first line indent on a manuscript from .5" to .25", but am having no luck. The indent indicator on the ruler changes, but the indents in the document do not change. I have the text highlighted, and the highlighting reflects the change, but not the text. I tried Style also ...

"Although Atlantis documents are supposed to be displayed in MS Word maximally closely to the original (Atlantis) display, RTF and DOC are not device-independent formats. The display might be different depending on a word processor and PC you use." Quite possibly what I want to do is not possible ...

"Could you please be more specific: which highlighting is not transferring accurately? (is not displayed correctly in MS Word?)" I correspond with a writer who uses Word, while I'm creating DOC files with Atlantis. I notice her highlighting sometimes comes through as gray, and I know she didn't use ...

MS Word document size mimic
I use Atlantis exclusively for manuscript word processing--it produces a more compact .doc document for printing. But when I have to send a manuscript electronically, to be read in Word, I'm forced to open it in bloated Word and readjust chapter headings before sending. I suspect I could do it by ...

Spacing Between Words
I do a lot of shrinking of lines in order to pull lone words back into a paragraph. I do this by compressing the text, but that isn't always desirable, and has its limits (0.3, for me). I long for a feature I used to have (in WordPerfect, I think). That allowed me to shrink the spaces between the ...

Spellchecker Selection
I'm using Version 1.6.1.6. How do I switch from one spellchecker (English United States) to another (English United Kingdom)? HELP doesn't tell me how to select. I assumed I would go to Tools/Options/Spellcheck/Spellcheckers and Dictionaries, highlight the one I want, and click Okay. But that doesn ...

Invisible Contractions
I'm using the latest Atlantis in Windows XP SP2. I've discovered that "Find" can't find contracted words. I wanted to change one novel character's use of "we'd" to "we had," and the only practical way to do that was to use the Find function. It found none, not even when I placed the cursor at the ...

Robert... Thanks for responding. Writers do go by so many lines down when positioning their chapter headings, just as they would with a typewriter. When the manuscript is double spaced, one-third of the way down the page would be line 8 in the position bar. I never had a problem before, either with ...

Line Position Changes
I have a completed novel on Atlantis 1.6.1.3 and am in the process of editing. Each chapter heading starts on line 8, double space. When I make changes, such as the deletion of a line, this changes the length of the chapter and moves the next chapter heading up on the page. Fine. But when I change ...
