SXW

what about of supoprt for SXW (StarOffice/Open Office Writer XML format)
it would highly add to portability of Atlantis and should be relativelly easy to implement, because the format is completely open

it seems to be a new and big standard in NO evil empire text processing...

Regrettably support for this format should not be expected in Atlantis (in the nearest future at least). It is not as popular as the Microsoft's document formats (DOC and RTF).

it is very popural on UNIX boxes

so AOM would gain compatibility with Linux world

but the main reason would be that even Microsoft is going to switch to XML based format for the next version of its Office suite. It will be different, of course, but from the nature of XML itself, when you have support for single format, support another one is more than easy.

OpenOffice/StarOffice format is goiung to be main standard over the open source world

We talked on this subject before. Probably not necessary as the OpenWriter is fully compatible with Word's doc-format. But it would be a nice feature none of Atlantis' competitors has.

yes, openwriter supports docs well

but there will be soon (at least on linux) other apps which will support SXW, but their DOC support may be worse...

and most importantly, SXW is XML, so it can be parsed and analyzed by whatever custom software for whatever reason you dream of. So its support adds very much to portability

and there is of course the opposite need... to import SXW to atlantis. i carry atlantis on my neck wherever I go(on usb flash disk), open writer does not fit in... and when i get some SXW---

Well, I thought on this type of user, having OpenWriter at home on a pc, but working on different pcs at the university etc. or on a laptop with less than 64 mb ram.

Perhaps we should think again on this item. I spend the last night working at the gas station - I wasn't young and I needed the money - and browsed the pc-magazines. On quite every cd I found the OpenOffice. Even on the Compuserve-cd it was as a giveaway.

When adding the OpenWriter-format to Ocean Mind and Nova, we could offer these users a smart and small tool, especially for the laptop users and the people using OW1 at the office while having an older pc at home.

I saw it on one of these older pcs. Really nice, but in the time you can study it's splash screen on a 64mb-pc you could have a cup of tea. Or write the letter with Atlantis.
