Request for xml document format

Post by abdobe »

Hi,
At last it seams that Microsoft has given in to the fact that the open xml document format is the future. This means that documents made in one program can be opened in others, not prohibited by proprietary formats. When the major office programs like MS Office and OO.org goes for xml, wouldn’t it be smart to let Atlantis do the same?
Yes, I know it takes a whole lot of work to do it, but nevertheless, I believe it would be the right thing to do.

Re: Support for XML Format

Post by Robert »

Greetings–
The XML format is not quite an established standard yet. Atlantis will offer support for the XML format if there is a big demand for such support. But do not expect it in the near future. Atlantis has currently other priorities. The interoperability of the RTF and DOC formats is very good as it is.
Cheers

Hi again,
Regarding the issue of a standard document format, I understand that you want to see an alternative established open format before you make any changes in Atlantis. Nevertheless, what do you think (I guess you have a meening regarding the ongoing format discussions?) Do you see Microsofts OpenXML format as a future solution, or the OASIS format as the comming standard?
By the way, I don't know if I'm right, but I have heard that the current MS doc format doesn't handle documents over 70 000 words.... which sounds like a drag, if it's right.
I agree that rtf/doc is good enough for now, but I also guess you have an opinion regarding the ongoing debate?
I ask in pure curiosity, not in demand.
As you say: Cheers 8)

It is not right. A MS Word document (RTF or DOC) can include as many words as needed.

Any Atlantis document can be saved as RTF or DOC. From the solely technical point, there is no need in any new document format. If another document format became a standard, we would implement support for it. We would implement support for the XML document format if it was required for the compatibility with MS Office. But as things stand, the DOC and RTF document formats are de facto standards. Sorry, XML is not on the current agenda.

Greetings--
This might be unfortunate, but whatever our opinion is on the subject of an open document format, it will not have any effect on the standard that will be chosen, or will emerge as a result of the ongoing battle.
This is a fact of (our) life. :(
But, when all is said and done, it certainly will be better if a universal standard does emerge.
