Rogue Tabs

Post by JimT. »

I'm using version 1.6.1.9. When I open a new document (in any format but text), it opens with tabs at .01, .51, and 3.51. Default tab is .50. This is a pain, for once a document is created with these tabs, changing indents is a mess. While I can delete them before creating the document, I'd rather not see them at all. Where are they coming from?

I've attached a screenshot showing the tab dialog box.

Hi Jim,
All new files are created using the default template. For some reason, your default template (“Normal.rtf” by default) includes these unwanted tab positions. You must remove them from the default template if you don’t want them to be recreated for each new document.

1. Click “File | Document Templates...”
2. In the “Choose Document Template” dialog, select the “Normal.rtf” template and open it.
3. Click “Format | Tabs…”
4. In the “Tabs” dialog, remove all unwanted tab positions. OK out of the dialog.
5. Save and close the “Normal.rtf” template.

Note that indents are normally created from the “Format | Paragraph…” dialog. “Ctrl+M” is a handy keyboard shortcut to create a left indent. Use “Shift+Alt+M” to add/remove a first line indent.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Robert

Thanks, Robert. That got rid of them.

I'm aware of the automatic first line indent, but I'm in the habit of using the Tab key to indent--old dog and all that. But I find that with the uninvited tabs removed, I can easily change the tabbed indent of the entire documetn to what I want.

This suggested solution doesn't work on my system. I set the default tab at 0.6cm in the Normal template, but the next time I opened the program to work on a document, the default had reverted to 1.27cm.

Hi,
Both the Style hot keys and the default Tab positions are saved with the “Normal” template on my system (XP SP3).

Could you please open the Atlantis “Document Formats & Templates” dialog (“File | New > Formats & Templates…”), and check which is your default “Normal” template for RTF or DOC files (whichever is your default file format)?

By default, your default “Normal” template should be “Normal.rtf”. If it is a different file, you have to open that custom file if you want to save changes to your default template.

Now here is how to save changes to your “Normal” template:

1. Open the “Choose Document Template” dialog (“File | Document Templates…”)
2. Select and open your default template.
3. Display the Control Board if it isn’t already displaying (F6).
4. Click to display the Control Board Styles panel (4th panel from the left).
5. Select the Style to assign hot keys to.
6. On the Control Board bottom toolbar, click “Modify style” (2nd button from the left).
7. In the “Edit Style” dialog, click in the “Hot key” box.
8. Key in any appropriate hot key.
9. OK out of the “Edit Style” dialog.

10. Double-click the horizontal ruler (or click “Format | Tabs…”) to open the “Tabs” dialog.
11. Set the “Default tab positions” to the required value.
12. OK out of the “Tabs” dialog.
13. Press “Ctrl+S” or click “File | Save…” to save your default template.
14. Press “Ctrl+W” or click “File | Close” to close your default template.

From then on, the settings saved in your Normal template will apply to all new documents created with “Ctrl+N” (or “File | New | Document”).

Note that the new settings saved in your Normal template won’t apply retroactively to documents that were previously created using a template with different settings. If you want “old” documents to behave as if they had been created with your new default settings, you’ll have to open and reformat them accordingly.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Robert

I already did all that. Can the default tab position I set in the Normal template be imported into an 'old' document along with other style elements?

The default tab positions are not imported. They are not “style-specific”, but “document-specific”. You have to change them in each of your “old” documents.
