Re: Checking Spelling in Different Languages

Post by Max_Quordlepleen »

After having carefully read the page on foreign language spellcheckers, I have a query. Would it be possible to save the foreign anguage dictionaries (say French and German) as txt files, then add those files to one's own custom dictionaries. It seems to me that if this were possible, it would mean that documents having scattered phrases in another language could be spellchecked without having to highlight the individual foreign phrases, and change their language setting, as the spellchecker would find the words in the custom dictionary. Is this feasible?

I cannot say that this would be the best solution. The French dictionaries contain about 140,000 words. It is very probably that they would not allow you properly check "normal" English texts (incorrectly spelt English words might be contained by the French dictionaries because they are correct in French).

Anyway you could do the following. Choose the Tools|Options... main menu command, click the Spellcheck tab, click the Spellcheck Systems And Dictionaries... button. Then highlight your default spellcheck system (the Australian English, I think).
Add the French lexicons (sscefr.zlx, sscefr2.zlx etc) to the list of main (fixed) dictionaries of your default spellcheck system.

Wow! Thanks for that - I don't think I want to try adding 140,000 words to my user list. Your suggestion to add the French dictionaries to my list of main dictionaries sounds like a much better idea. I shall do that instead. Cheers

I just wanted to warn you that by adding non-English dictionaries to an English spellcheck system, you would not be able to properly check "normal" English texts because Atlantis would not report some incorrectly spelt English words just because they are contained by the French dictionaries.

The same method would work if I had Britsh English as my default, and wanted to add the American English zlx, I take it?

Of course. You can add any lexicon (dictionary) to any spellcheck system. But you should be aware of possible results of such "improvements".

But you are a boss. If you know that you do right...

;)

You should also remember that the more dictionaries are used by a particular spellcheck system and consequently more words are available in these dictionaries the slower spellchecking is.

Hi folks!

I haven't read the page that Max mentioned yet, but does...

documents having scattered phrases in another language could be spell checked without having to highlight the individual foreign phrases, and change their language setting

...mean that if I have two dictionaries/spell checkers installed and I highlight some text...Atlantis will ask which dictionary I want to use? (Both are Atlantis dictionaries of course.)

Perhaps I was too hasty to do this:

Add the French lexicons (sscefr.zlx, sscefr2.zlx etc) to the list of main (fixed) dictionaries of your default spell check system.

Oh well, it works great for me so far...:)

All I need is a Spanglish dictionary, then I could wander verbally in print as much as I do in RL. :)

Alantis is great! I love it! Everything seems to come in a bundle, but I don't really need a spreadsheet or a database, I need a word processor. Atlantis fills the bill nicely and is getting better all the time.

Thanks for the help admin and could you post the address of the page on different languages please?

Thanks,

steve
