Scrolling Documents

Post by Peter Merton »

For anyone who reads long documents, I have found the following feature in Notepad++ to be very useful. One can use the Ctrl and Arrow keys to scroll up and down pages very conveniently. The cursor travels only to the top or bottom of the screen and does not disappear, so it can quickly be brought to an area of text needing modification or correction.
Surely anyone dealing with lengthy documents would find this a useful feature if it was available in Atlantis, whether using Draft or Print Layout View.
I read 10 to 15 articles taken from the internet daily. I copy them into Notepad++ for reading purposes because of what I have said above.
I would obviously prefer to copy these documents into Atlantis because that is my program of choice, and I hope that one day we may see this feature included.

Hi Peter,
I could bang my head on the wall right now for not thinking about it sooner!

There is a very simple solution to your quandary.

Simply toggle on the “Scroll Lock” key on your keyboard! It works perfectly well in Atlantis on my system (XP SP3).

When the “Scroll Lock” key is on, and I press the “PageDown” or “PageUp” arrow keys in Atlantis, the document pages are scrolled but the caret remains in place.

Voilà!

I hope you have a “Scroll Lock” key on your keyboard. It is located next to the “Print Screen” key, and sometimes it’s named “ScrLk”.

Note that for some it is a “useless” key. Here is from http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-scroll-lock.htm:

"The development of navigational scroll bars eventually rendered the scroll lock key virtually useless. Some computer games still use the scroll lock function to allow players access to inventories or provide easier navigation through screens. … The scroll lock key has been made nearly obsolete with the introduction of scroll bars, … Future keyboards may not even include a scroll lock key, except perhaps for nostalgic purposes. Keyboard reconfiguration often lags behind software development, so the changes may be gradual."

Let's hope this guy is not so wise as he thinks!

You might want to have a look at the following Web pages:

Hi Robert,
Many thanks for your reply.
Regrettably my scroll lock key has no effect when toggled.
It works in Excel, however.
For the time being I shall stick with Notepad++. It serves my purpose well.
Regards,
Peter.

Hi Peter,
I have looked further into this. It turns out that things work as expected (the caret stays put at the top of each page) on 3 conditions:

a. The Scroll Lock is on.
b. The document is viewed under the Atlantis “View | Draft” mode.
c. The “Page Down” or “Page Up” key is used to scroll the document.

Have you tried things in this way?

HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

In plain text editors like Notepad++, Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down do not scroll pages. They scroll the editor window one line up or down, and adjust the cursor position in order to keep it in view.

Such scrolling does not make much sense in rich-text editors (especially under the Print Layout view mode). It is used mainly in programming code editors. But there are more reasons why Atlantis could not have such scrolling commands.

In Atlantis Word Processor you have plenty of hot keys to scroll the document window:

Up Arrow
Down Arrow
Ctrl+Up Arrow
Ctrl+Down Arrow
Ctrl+Home
Ctrl+End
PgUp
PgDn
Ctrl+PgUp
Ctrl+PgDn

Plus you can always press the F5 hot key to go to the position of the last modification in your document.

Hi,
I have tried all of the suggestions, without success.
As mentioned above, my scroll lock key does not operate in Atlantis, although it does work in Excel (about the only program where it does work).
The nearest I can get to what I would like, if using Atlantis, is to press the mouse wheel and scroll that way. That comes very close to what is desired.
I can, of course, also click on the single arrows at the top or the bottom of the vertical scroll bar to move one line at a time.
Thanks for all the trouble taken and the suggestions.
Regards,
Peter.
