Windows 7 Game explorer interfering wih Atlantis

Post by DerWanderer »

Windows 7 "Games explorer" interpret the Atlantis.exe executable as the game "Atlantis The Lost Tales" makes a shortcut named "Atlantis The Lost Tales™" and worse, interfere with the starting of Atlantis resulting in slow loading of the application. Instead of starting instantly as it should it takes 15 to 30 seconds to load, negating the light and fast character that Atlantis is famous for.

Game explorer is an abomination, have many bugs and part of the progressive dumbing-down decadence of Microsoft.

The problem is when starting Atlantis.exe windows loads c:\windows\SysWOW64\gameux.dll an and c:\windows\SysWOW64\GameUXLegacyGDFs.dll and finds the name of the executable Atlantis.exe registered in the resource of those files as a game.

There are two bad solutions:

one is to delete or rename gameux.dll located both on c:\windows\SysWOW64 and on c:\windows\system32 (in the case of Atlantis a 32bit application only the c:\windows\SysWOW64 is relevant). A complicated thing since the dll is protect by windows trustedinstaller (you have to take ownership of the file to rename or delete it). A normal user will be at lost.

The other is to rename the executable of the Atlantis Word Processor. A bad solution because would brake links, shortcuts and any reference or self-reference that other application (e.g a script) or Atlantis itself makes with the name.

So I suggest that the makers of such brave and reactive application that is the Atlantis word processor from now on change the executable to a name other than Atlantis.exe (say Awp.exe or something like) lest users on windows 7 think the application is slow and bloated.

Thanks for the developers for the great application, fast and lean word processor that Atlantis is known for. Keep the good work.

First, is important to mention that the source of interference is "Game explorer" systematic check of executable names (and not simply the installation folder name).

Second, The Game Explorer's Options to Turning off Download information and not check online for updates doesn't resolve the issue. The only solution to stop interference of Game Explorer on the Atlantis Word Processor are:

(1) to delete or rename the above mentioned Dlls (That are protected, so difficult for non technical users to perform)

or

(2) rename the application executable (would break links).

But in solution (2) if the makers of Atlantis Change originally the compiled executable name everything would be resolved nicely without the need to fiddle with dlls or break links.

There is a third solution which I applied on my Windows 10 system a long time ago (actually after install of Windows 10): simply deactivate/uninstall Game Explorer altogether. You won’t be bothered any more! :)
Cheers.

You simply can't uninstall Game explorer in Windows 7.

Even turning off all the game option on "Turn windows features on and off" on Control Panel "Program and Features" won't disable the beast.

Windows 10 doesn't have Game explorer.Besides Windows 10 is not in discussion. The topic is about windows 7 Game explorer interference with Atlantis.

Whatever you may say, the problem is with Game Explorer interfering with Atlantis Word Processor. Full stop. On whichever system it is occurring.
I am not quite sure now if it was under Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10, but the Windows Game Explorer kept interfering with Atlantis Word Processor on my PC. I am adamant that this nuisance stopped as soon as I had deactivated/uninstalled Game Explorer, and everything linked to Windows “Gaming”.

The executable file of Atlantis will be renamed to "awp.exe".

Please choose the "Help | Check for Updates..." menu command of Atlantis. The executable file will be renamed automatically.
