Making Atlantis Word Processor Portable

Post by keithsa »

Hi, all. It's been a while since I've been here. I haven't used Atlantis for months. The other day I came across my old USB flash drive that I had Atlantis on, and decided to check to see if it would install in a portable applications virtualization app called Ceedo. Of course, my trial of Atlantis had long since expired, so I downloaded the latest version to give it a whirl.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Ceedo, it is a portable applications virtualization application that allows you to install your applications on a USB drive and use them on any Windows 2000, XP or Vista PC. You don’t need admin rights to use Ceedo or any of the applications you have installed on your Ceedo drive.

You can install your own applications on your Ceedo drive without any modifications at all. Ceedo supports applications such as Microsoft Office, Photoshop CS3, Dreamweaver, and more.

Atlantis installs in the Ceedo environment and runs just fine.

You can download a fully functional time limited trial of Ceedo from http://ceedo.com. Once you have installed Ceedo on your USB drive, you will need to install Argo, the Ceedo application installer in order to install Atlantis.
Lead me not into temptation for I shall find it myself.

What I cannot understand is why anyone would want to spend $39 on Ceedo when they can have PortableApps http://portableapps.com for free.

I believe that PortableApps can do most of what Ceedo (and U3) can do - and better. It does not support Microsoft Office - on the other hand you can have OpenOffice, which I think can do most of the same job.

But you are right: Atlantis is completely portable - there is even a recipe of how to do it on their home page. http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en ... drives.htm

You might want to check MojoPac too.

portable application platforms

Post by Robert »

Hi,
For those of you interested in portable application platforms (application launchers for USB keys), here are a few relevant Web pages:

SmithTech Portable Menu (http://usb.smithtech.us/projects/spm.php)

PStart (http://www.pegtop.net/start)

MojoPac Freedom (http://www.mojopac.com/portal/content/p ... /index.jsp)

Cheers,
Robert

Yup,

Atlantis WP does work in MojoPac. But ... MojoPac requires admin privileges to run in Windows XP, and Vista is not supported. You can install the Usher plug-in to make MojoPac run in a limited account, but hey, guess what, Usher needs admin privileges for installation as well. MojoPac is nothing more than a sophisticated sandbox for testing software. Other than that, MojoPac has no practical use in the real world.
