512 bit?

Post by Max_Quordlepleen »

Are there any plans to consider upping the encryption in Atlantis to 512 bits at some future time? I know that the currnt encryption is very good, and I have had that confirmed by independent analysts I respect, but I just wondered if, with the increasing speed and power of PCs, an increase to 512 might be on the cards sometime. :)

Probably you heard that PGP allows to select a key size up to 3072 bits. But this does not mean that its encryption is more secure. PGP uses 128-bit symmetric keys for encryption. 3072-bit keys are not used for encryption of your document itself. They are used for service purposes. To crack a PGP encryption you have to crack a 128-bit symmetric key only.

Do not worry. Even a 128-bit encryption is very secure.
There are 2 to the power of 128 (or 3.4E+38 ) different 128-bit keys. No computer network could check all possible keys.

About 256-bit encryption. There are 2 to the power of 256 (or 1.16E+77) different 256-bit keys. Hackers would require billions and billions of years with all the computers of the world to crack your document.

All you need is a good password…

You could find more information about the Atlantis encryption here.

Don't get me wrong, I have no complaints about the security of Atlantis CODs - you once posted a link to a ZIP file with a paper explaining Atlantis encryption, which I submitted for review to some crypto fiends I know, and they gave it high marks. I was just thinking out loud. :)

Randy: Why use a 4096 bit encryption key? How long do you want these messages to remain secret? Five years? Ten years? Twenty-five years?

Avi: I want them to remain secret for as long as men are capable of evil. -

1024-, 2048-, and 4096-bit keys are used by the asymmetric encryption schemes. They are equivalent to the 128-bit keys of the symmetric encryption used by Atlantis.

Sometimes a 128-bit encryption is more secure than a 4096-bit encryption. This depends on the encryption scheme.
