OK, mea culpa! All this time I've been labouring under the delusion that the chart was ASCII when it was ANSI! Whatever it is, I'm glad Atlantis will be making it easier to insert symbols with the new Unicode utility. Best of both worlds!

It's not old-fashioned at all. I downloaded the Unicode upgrade, thinking that it would make it easier to enter the occasional Greek or Hebrew word, but instead I get a comparatively dysfunctional replacement of the nifty symbol chart.
