Can I split a window of one document?

Hi,

I am testing Atlantis and it's great so far with a very good structure! Trying to split the window of one document so I am able to take a look at two parts of one document at the same time (like in Word - it's very useful if u have a large text) failed.
Didn't I find the view command? Please help!

Atlantis Word Processor currently does not have this feature. Sorry.

Does it help you to open a second Atlantis at the same time?

Thank you for your suggestion, VJF, but unfortunately not. I am able to open one document twice, but the second one is only a copy. I need to edit the documents in both windows.

At the moment Im using the quick navigator. It's not the same but a very nice feature though.

Wow! That is truly wonderful news.

I am writing a short book right now (a "how to" book about Fade In screenwriting software). I am constantly having to flip back and forth from one part of the document to another by using the Headings in the Control Board.

I am looking forward to this feature.

Just this morning I was asking myself -- "What word processor do I have that can allow me to work on two sections of the same document at one, like Microsoft Word has done since at least 2003?"

Softmaker Office? Nope (not that I can find)
Libreoffice? Nope (not that I can find)

but now ATLANTIS -- YES!

Plus the ability to track back and forth with footnotes/endnotes? OUTSTANDING

I used the split view yesterday for several hours. I did not encounter any problems.

Initially I could not find how to perform the split. I thought that the toolbar would have some kind of icon on it for this. Then I discovered the item under the VIEW menu. The SPLIT item on the menu makes some icons appear.

It would be nice just to have icons there without having to use VIEW > SPLIT. Of course, is is possible to turn SPLIT off with the X icon once the SPLIT icons are made available.

But I am very happy with the functionality of the feature. As I said, so far no problems.

Oh ... I turned off the feature to dim the inactive pane. I found it distracting. I would probably not want to dim the inactive pane in any case, but the dimming color was too dark for me.

The Split View mode can be activated in 3 different ways. You can:
1. Click the dedicated button on the View toolbar to toggle the Split View mode on:

2. Use the “View | Split” main menu command.
3. Assign a hot key to the View > Split command/button, and use that hot key. It will toggle the Split View mode on.

The Split View mode can be <b>deactivated</b> in 5 different ways. You can:
1. Click again the dedicated button on the View toolbar to toggle the Split View mode off:

2. Use the “View | Split” main menu command. This is a toggle command too.
3. Click the “Close split” button on the “Split” context toolbar.
4. Hold the mouse pointer over the line separating the two panes until the mouse cursor changes into a double arrow. Double-click.
5. If you have assigned a hot key to the View > Split command/button, use that hot key. It will toggle the Split View mode off.

The View toolbar does have the Split button under the default configuration. If you have a custom configuration, you can install the new Split button to the View toolbar through the "Tools | Customize | Toolbars..." menu command.

For others who may be reading all this and have not tried using the SPLIT VIEW yet:

In my own defense I have to say that I looked for a View toolbar. I did not know that it is the one with the pilcrow symbol (the paragraph symbol) in it. If you put your cursor on any of the icons in that little panel, the SPLIT icon that Robert mentioned pops up.

I will also point out that after I found the SPLIT option under MAIN > VIEW, the icons that popped up did not appear in a panel under the VIEW toolbar, but in a panel under the TOOLS toolbar (the one that has ABC/spellcheck). That drew my attention away from the VIEW toolbar.

In your defense, rstroud, I will say that I too found the toolbar icons a little unintuitive, so maybe some improvement to make the feature more accessible to new users might be desirable. But as the icons are all there and can be customized, there's no issue for us who are "power users" (and that may describe most everyone who uses Atlantis).

Thank you, freecicero. I am glad it was not just me. I was sure that I would figure it all out. I was just a little surprised that I could not immediately find the proper toolbar.

But I am really glad that Atlantis now how this great feature! I have been using it a lot in my current book project.

As for power users ... I have had a lot of experience as a software user, and I have often been the person to whom others come for answers about how to use software.

I would agree that most users of Atlantis are a little more knowledgeable than average. I think it is because Atlantis users tend to be people who at least dabble in writing books and articles. People like that have to learn how to do more than the average person.
