Autocorrect in version 4

Post by lynneconnolly »

I would love to have different autocorrect versions for different languages. Then I could automatically put my English spelling into the US version, eg colour to color and so on. I write in UK English, but some of the people I sent manuscripts to want it in US English. But only some, not all. Going through and changing them all, even with the "change all" dialogue, is a chore.

You could try using the attached file in Atlantis.
1. Click “Tools | Default Language…”, select UK English and check “Associate all new text with the following language”. OK out of the dialog.
2. In the document window, place the insertion cursor within a word marked as “UK English” and Click “Tools | AutoCorrect Options…”
3. In the UK English AutoCorrect Options, press the “Save To File…” button and save the file to your disk. This will backup your current AutoCorrect Options in case you want to restore them later on with the “Load From File…” button.
4. Still in the UK English AutoCorrect Options, press the “Load From File…” button, and direct Atlantis to the attached file on your disk. This will load a series of AutoCorrect entries from UK English to US English. OK out of the dialog.
As soon as you start typing, Atlantis should automatically correct your UK spelling to its US counterpart.
Unfortunately, the spellchecker will report all non-UK spellings as misspellings. You can ignore all of it, or switch “Spellcheck-As-You-Type” off altogether in the “Tools | Options…” dialog (Spellcheck tab). Alternatively, you could simply switch off “Underline misspellings”.

Alternatively, you could type your texts in UK English, and convert them to US English online at any of the following sites:
British to American English Converter
UK English to US English converter
TRANSLATE ENGLISH TO ENGLISH

Thank you for your reply. I was looking for something a bit more straightforward, like an autocorrect file attached to an installed language option, but UK English and US English are treated as the same language.
When you have a 90,000 word document, that would be more straightforward. I can't see myself doing it for each word that is spelled differently. That, and macros, are the only things I miss from Microsoft Word, and I'm not going back to that anytime soon.
At the moment, I highlight everything, change the language to US English and go through the spellcheck. It's just that it takes a long time.
Mind you, this is just a wish, not a dealbreaker or anything like that. Just something I thought might be worth mentioning.

In Atlantis, UK and US English are not treated as the same language. Both the spellchecker and AutoCorrect behave differently depending on which language is associated with the current word. If you click “Tools | Default Language…”, select UK English and check “Associate all new text with the following language”, then load the attached file in the AutoCorrect dialog, each word that you type in UK English will automatically be changed into its US counterpart, if there is any such counterpart.
