Space in French quotes

In French, there is a space between the quotes (guillemets) and the quoted text, « et voilà ».
Word automatically inserts such non-breaking spaces in French texts. How can I get AWP to do the same thing?

Just make sure that your document text in Atlantis is marked as French. Under the default settings, Atlantis automatically replaces straight double quotes in French texts with guillemets, and inserts nonbreaking spaces as well.

It does replace quotes with guillemets, but no space is inserted.

This is because the "Smart space management" option is off.

At some point in the past I had to turn this option off. Before replying I was trying to remember why.
