Cannot Delete Read-Only
Cannot Delete Read-Only
Suddenly, all my Word 7 Atlantis documents---old and new--come out "Read-Only" (And I never use Read-Only). I've tried the usual solutions: My read-only boxes are all unchecked. Anti-virus gives me nothing. I tried a temporary "Factory Settings". I have total access for security (Administrator etc).Have turned computer on and off.
I may try to boot up with the simplest process, but if that works, I still won't know how to fix it.
So now, I'll open a new file, type in a few words, title it xxx, save it. And when I bring it back, it's Read-Only.
Not much of a tecchie (obviously!), so any simple solutions for this longtime Atlantis user highly appreciated.

Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
P.S. Just booted into Safe Mode---and Read-Only has disappeared. (Good news). Rebooted to normal and Read-Only makes its venomous return (Bad news). Any suggestions?
Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
If the document files are not read-only when you view their properties in the file manager, but they are "read-only" when opened in Atlantis, the most probable explanation is that your antivirus is preventing Atlantis from accessing those files for writing. Have you tried disabling your antivirus temporarily? What is your antivirus, by the way?
Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
One more thing. Does your Atlantis display a message saying "Atlantis was denied full access to the following file(s): ... Please make sure that Atlantis is not blocked by your security software ..."?
Does your antivirus provide the so called "anti-ransomware protection"?
Also, did you start having these issues immediately after updating Atlantis?
That is the worst part about some antiviruses. They just shut things down without saying a word.Anti-virus gives me nothing.

Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
No messages, and it started about a month after updating (three days ago)(. I'll try to disable Avast and will let you know., Many thanks.
Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
Hi. Firewall and Antivirus (Avast) all disabled. Rebooted. No solution, alas. Then started carefully changing things on Options, but also no effect. (Changed things back!). Here's the deal. a) All old docs come out Read-Only----though they were perfectly normal until three days ago. New docs are fine while I work on them---but the moment after they are saved and retrieved, they come out (sigh) Read-Only. I must finish a story tonight, and can probably work around it by editing on one document. And then---because it can't be saved---pasting it on a new document.
But it's an unneeded hassle. And can probably be resolved with one click. If I only I knew where to click
I posted problem to Atlantis Support. Possibly they (or you or another Atlantan) will have a solution.
Many thanks.

Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
Atlantis does not make files read-only.
You would find a lot of info if you google for "avast read-only".

Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
Thanks. That at least lowers the list of culprits. I'll start working on Avast.
Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
WOW! Yes, I deleted Avast-----and all those bothersome "read-only" boxes disappeared as well. I am elated. But now....could you suggest (unofficially, of course) a non-invasive Anti-Virus? With thanks for all.
Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
Do you think the built-in Windows protection is not enough?
I have submitted Atlantis to Avast for whitelisting.

Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
Windows 7 doesn't have much of an anti-virus (if any). Anyhow, Avast is deleted forever. I'm now using Alvira, which----so far---seems fine, and all systems on Atlantis are Go. The Administrator gave the clue by noting that Atlantis has nothing to do with Read-Only, and then the Avast solution was obvious. As in most "serious" problems, the solution is simple and obvious.
(That is, once you know what it is!!!)

Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
If your computer is not 100% offline, and you are concerned about the security of your system, using a very old operating system may not be a very good idea. But I am sure that you know what you are doing.
Re: Cannot Delete Read-Only
I'm never totally sure what I am doing. But with help from you and the mortal Atlantans, so far, so good. Thanks for advice.
