Some improvements

Post by rafal »

I've just finished writing my first translation of a book in Atlantis, which should be out soon as I already have a willing publisher. I would like to present an idea for a few changes that came to my mind while working.

1. Atlantis does not remember the page where you stopped editing text when saving. When you start the program and load a previously edited document, you always end up on the first page of the document.

2. In my country, when creating dialogues, a dash is used. For example:

— I love you — she said.

However, inserting such a character in Atlantis at the beginning of a sentence automatically creates a list. You can solve this problem by turning off automatic creation of lists, but then you also cannot automatically create lists, e.g. by adding a number at the beginning of a sentence. It would be nice to have an option to disable automatic creation of lists for individual characters.

3. Atlantis only supports EPUB 2.0 format. Would it be possible to add EPUB 3.0?

4. Atlantis does not support Open Document Format.

Other than that, I really enjoyed working with Atlantis and intend to continue using it as my default text editor.

Congratulations on your book translation.

1. Is the "Save cursor position to document files" option checked on the "Load/Save" tab of the "Tools | Options" dialog of Atlantis?

2. First, you can always undo individual auto-list corrections by pressing Ctrl+Z after you pressed Enter at the end of a dialog line and the automatic list item has been created. That being said, I know that a leading em dash is used to introduce dialogs in some European languages. But as far as I know, the dash is not supposed to be followed by a space character. Atlantis would not convert it to an automatic bulleted list if the dash was not followed by a space character. Is the dash supposed to be followed by a space character in dialogs in your language?

Thanks for the reply.

1. I had no idea about this feature and I've checked the options and support pages many times  When enabled, it does indeed save the cursor position. The only downside is that it relies on the cursor and you have to save the document. It may not work so well when I'm editing text and making changes from time to time.

2. In Polish, at the beginning of a dialogue we indent a paragraph, and each time we use a dash we insert a space before and after the dash.

Here's an example: https://imgur.com/a/kAXgj9r

I think you should add an option to disable automatic list creation for the dash. It would be very useful.

[Unfortunately the system once more locked me out when trying to preview my post. So all the text is gone and I do not like to write it again from scratch. Just a quick summary concerning Nr. 1 (if it is not written clearly enough, please tell me).]

In addition to the possibilities that a document opens automatically either at its beginning or at the location of the last cursor position I would find it useful if there existed a command to jump (after opening the document) immediately to the location where I performed the last edit (which is not always the place of the last cursor position).

In MS Word (at least in older versions) such a command exists (called "Vorherige Bearbeitung" in German, possibly "Return to previous edit" in English ?) and I use it very often. It works simply by the click on the appropriate button in the toolbar.

I could imagine that something like that could meet rafal's needs too. (?)

It's more about the Resume Reading Feature. This feature remembers the page you were last on before closing the document. This is useful when you are proofreading text and not editing something on every page.

I see. But (in case you did not edit something) won't be the cursor anyway on the page which you had last viewed before closing the document (just by clicking somewhere on this page)? If yes, I think that in this case the option described above by admin ("Save cursor position to document files") would help.

According to your first posting it seemed to me that you miss something different (namely the same as me  ):

The next build will have new options in the “AutoCorrect Options” dialog:
