Access violation at 0040207F in awp.exe

Post by gentje »

Hey there,

First - using Atlantis on a Win11Pro Dell laptop (up-to-date).

After a recent restart of my computer (after using it much of the day with no issues), I opened Atlantis, but when I tried to type, it threw the following at me:

"EAccessViolation

Error loading spellcheck dictionary "G\Teresa\Documents\Atlantis\Spellcheck\uk.zlx
Do you wish to retail this dictionary and make another attempt later?

Yes No"

When I clicked yes, it threw another Access violation my way:

"Access violation at 0040207F in awp.exe"

And shut down Atlantis.

I tried another restart and the same thing happened.

I checked the Spellcheck folder in Atlantis and found the following:
AtlantisSpellcheckFolder-22Sep2024.jpg

Realizing I hadn't updated recently, I installed the most recent update and this time upon opening, I didn't even get the Error loading the spellcheck dictionary - it just went straight to access violations:

Any advice on how to fix this short of uninstalling and reinstalling Atlantis, which would mean setting everything up again the way I like it. I use Atlantis daily and really need it to work.

Thanks,

Teresa

If you have an antivirus, please make sure that it does not prevent Atlantis from accessing its files (check the settings or log of the antivirus). This would be a good starting point.

I don't think that's the issue as it had worked five minutes before and for years previously - all that changed was a reboot.

If the spellcheck file is where it is supposed to be and it is not corrupted, but Atlantis still cannot load it, this can only mean access issues. I believe it is not hard to temporarily disable the antivirus and conduct simple tests.

You can also create a new portable copy of Atlantis on another drive, then copy all the files from “G\Teresa\Documents\Atlantis” to the home folder of the portable copy.

But WHY would this suddenly happen after years of it working fine?

I don't have time to muck about with testing. I don't want to give up on Atlantis, but if it just gives up on me like this, I won't have a choice.

McAfee says there are no blocked connections.

This is not about connections. This is about access to certain locations on your disk. Your antivirus probably includes anti-ransomware protection or a similar feature. Disabling the antivirus temporarily is not hard.

I did that, and it didn't make a difference. Still had the same issue. Added the following files to excluded list in McAfee, rebooted comptuer, still no change:

The spellcheck files are not executable. There is no point in excluding them. If you need to exclude something, it is the executable file of Atlantis:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Atlantis\awp.exe

Creating a portable clone of your current copy of Atlantis is very simple:

1. Create a new folder on another available disk – for example, “C:\Portable apps\Atlantis”.

2. Download the setup file of Atlantis:
https://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/downloads.htm

3. Run the setup file. Choose “C:\Portable apps\Atlantis” as a destination folder and check the “Install as portable” option. Complete the install.

4. Copy all the files and folders from “G\Teresa\Documents\Atlantis” to “C:\Portable apps\Atlantis” with the file manager.

5. Run the “awp.exe” file from “C:\Portable apps\Atlantis”.

The executable file of Atlantis is awp.exe, not Atlantis.exe.

Please create a clean portable copy of Atlantis:

You can launch this portable copy by running the “C:\Portable apps\Atlantis\awp.exe” file.

I am sorry, but you did not do this. I suggested to install to a different drive ("C:" for example). You installed to the same "G:" drive. I suggested to install as portable. You did not install as portable because you cannot install as portable to the "Program Files" folder. The entire Help article on portability is a 3-minute read:
https://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/e ... rtable.htm

OK, if for some reason the "G:" drive is the only available drive in your system, please follow these simple steps:

1. Run the setup file of Atlantis.

2. On the "Choose destination folder" tab of the setup, paste the following text to the edit box:

G:\Portable apps\Atlantis

and check the "Install as portable" box.

3. Complete the install. This would create a new clean portable copy of Atlantis.

Run the "awp.exe" file from "G:\Portable apps\Atlantis" to launch this portable copy.

Another suggestion. Open the "G\Teresa\Documents\Atlantis" folder with the file manager, and rename the "Spellcheck" folder to anything else (for instance, "_Spellcheck"). Then run your standard copy of Atlantis by double-clicking the Atlantis Desktop shortcut.

Success, at last. Thank you!!

I will note, however, that Atlantis was installed initially to my C: drive, not my G: drive, so I thought I had followed your instructions.

Either way, all set now. I really appreciate you sticking through this with me. I had no idea how dependent I was on AWP until suddenly I couldn't use it!

Teresa, could you please do the following?
1. Right-click the Windows icon and choose Windows Terminal (Admin).
2. Click the down arrow icon and choose Command Prompt.
3. Copy, paste, then run the following command-line:
echo %programfiles(x86)%
Windows will tell you which folder it considers as the official folder to install non portable applications.
This will be the Windows system folder where a non portable copy of Atlantis should be installed.

I followed your instructions and installed the portable copy.

It has now happened AGAIN. However, I think I know what the issue is. My computer went to sleep while I had Atlantis open. This never used to be an issue, but I think the same thing happened last weekend as well, but I can't say for sure.

I will rinse and repeat the installing a portable version and see what happens.
