OK. Here are instructions that will most likely work:
1. Press the Windows icon in combination with R.
2. Type CMD, then press Enter. You should get a new Command Prompt window (“C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe”).
3. Copy, paste, then run the following command-line:

echo %programfiles(x86)%

Windows will tell you which folder it considers as the official folder to install non-portable applications.
This will be the Windows system folder where a non-portable copy of Atlantis should be installed.
On the other hand, note that a portable copy of Atlantis should not, and normally cannot be installed in that dedicated Windows system folder.

Sorry for sounding stupid, but do I copy/paste “C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe” and THEN copy paste "echo %programfiles(x86)%"?

I don't like playing around in DOS anymore, though it's how I started in the late 80s.

It’s a Windows command-line. DOS doesn’t exist any more.
“C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe” is the text string displayed in the title bar of the Command Prompt window. But you could press the Windows icon in combination with R, then run “C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe” directly.

It has now happened AGAIN. However, I think I know what the issue is. My computer went to sleep while I had Atlantis open.

I assume that you now have a properly working portable copy of Atlantis (all Atlantis files in one folder). If the problem happens again, please ZIP the entire portable folder of Atlantis and send it to support@atlantiswordprocessor.com. Use any free web service to send large files.

and that is where I had installed a permanent version of Atlantis last week, but then followed your instructions instead for the portable version:

The permanent one just now opened with no incident, but either version I launch is giving me a Windows error "ding" without telling me the reason. I just ignore it and keep working.

All my other software (and I use a lot of indie software) is working to spec.

The copy of Atlantis on your screenshot above is not portable. You cannot create a portable copy of Atlantis under the “Program Files” folder.

The only “ding” that Atlantis may play at startup is a “Notification" sound:

You can disable individual sounds of Atlantis through the “Tools | Customize | Sounds...” menu command.

I was worried I wasn't clear enough - the version of AWP in the Program Files folder is the regular version, NOT the portable one.

I will double-check the sounds - I thought I had them all turned off.

For now, as all seems to work, I'll see how it goes and follow your advice about zipping and sending if I encounter more issues.
