Disabling capitalization after using Polish abbreviations

Post by rafal »

In Polish, we have various abbreviations that end with a dot. For example:

itp. - And similar ones

np. - For example

ul. - Street

r. - year

pt. - under the title

When I use them in the middle of a sentence, Atlantis automatically capitalizes the next word. It can be very annoying.

For me this does not happen (fortunately). :D

Please take a look at Tools --> AutoCorrect Options. The box for "Capitalize first letter of sentences" must be unchecked in order to avoid what happens to you. (A dot is regarded as a punctuation mark that finishes a sentence - even if in some cases, like abbrevations, it has another meaning.)

Do not disable "Capitalize first letter of sentences". Use the “Exceptions…” button to the right of that option, and enter the various abbreviations that end with a dot in Polish.
Of course, do this for the AutoCorrect Options associated with the Polish language (Polish language shown in the Atlantis status bar).

I admit that I was not aware of this possibility with the exceptions. Sorry. :( For someone who finds it important that a not-capitalized letter at the beginning of a sentence is corrected automatically, your suggestion is without doubt the perfect solution. Personally, I had disabled the option "Capitalize first letter ..." immediately after starting to work with Atlantis. Simply because I do not need it and so I save myself the work to define a lot of exceptions. - Finally it seems to be a matter of personal needs and preferences which method is used.

Thanks for your help. I can add exceptions myself, but maybe they should be added by default for Polish autocorrection.

The AutoCorrect data built-in into Atlantis does not include the Polish resources. If someone composes them, they could be added to Atlantis. But the “capitalize” exceptions are a very small part of the AutoCorrect data set for a language. The “replace with” pairs are a much bigger part.

And how to prepare these Polish resources for AutoCorrect? Maybe I could help with that.

The "replace with" AutoCorrect data is just a plain text file. One "replace with" item per line. A tab character between the "replace" and "with" parts. Attached the default "replace with" items for the English AutoCorrect.
