This is a feature that few mid-level wordprocessors offer. Major suites like WordPerfect and OpenOffice do, but for Atlantis, solutions like PDFCreator or PDF995 are better options

Yes, Guest, and your statement that Atlantis should be able to create PDF files is only your opinion, isn't it? I, for one, disagree with you and agree with Max.

Of course. That is so obviously true that I felt no need to state it explicitly.

However, and this is not an opinion, there is such a thing as bloatware. Saying " I want Atlantis to do [insert feature here]" is an honest statement of opinion. Saying "Atlantis needs or should have [insert feature here]" is quite different.

At the moment, Atlantis is an incredible app., mixing a great range of features and packing them into a very small package. If every feature that someone thought should be added were added, Atlantis would be indistinguishable from Word. If Atlantis is to retain the things that make it so great, then there needs to be an awareness on the part of its users that Atlantis is not supposed to be a "kitchen-sink" type of wordprocessor, with every conceivable feature added just because someone thinks it should be.

From a wordprocessing point of view, the one critical feature still needed by Atlantis is table support, and after that, I'm sure other enhancements can be thought of and added, while trying to keep Atlantis the lithe machine it is.

Finally, on the issue of PDF, the very real advantage to using a PDF driver is that it is not app.-specific. Install a PDF driver, and you will be able to print any file to PDF, not merely Atlantis files. And, of course, printing to PDF is then just a matter of selecting the appropriate driver.

Hi, Max!
I never could understand why it is universally claimed that "PDFs are not app.-specific".
For anybody to be able to read PDFs, the Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed.
So PDFs are not application-independent. They can only be opened in the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
RTF files are far less tied to a specific application. RTFs have more claim to being non-app-specific than PDFs ever will.
What's more, downloading the Adobe Acrobat Reader is quite a lengthy job and the Adobe Acrobat Reader is a rather heavy application. Even on my very fast system, Adobe Acrobat Reader takes quite a while to launch.
So what makes PDFs so special? Not their universality, but actually their "presentation" e-book-like format.
Cheers,
Robert

No, Robert, you misunderstood what I meant by "not app.-specific". In my post, I said, "the very real advantage to using a PDF driver is that it is not app.-specific.", meaning that using a PDF driver to dcreate PDF files, as opposed to building the feature into Atlantis, would mean that one's ability to create PDF files was not specific, or limited, to just one app.

As an example, My office suite, WordPerfect11, offers Publish to PDF, but it is only built into the wordprocessor, not the spreadsheet or the database parts of the suite. That was what I meant by "app.-specific". My post was in defence of Atlantis, not a criticism.

As it happens, though, you don't need Acrobat to read PDF files. There are many readers out there that will do the job. For example, in my Linux installation, I do not have Acrobat Reader installed, but I have two PDF readers installed. Even in Windows, there are smaller, less bloated alternatives to Acrobat Reader.

I agree that RTF is more universal than PDF, but they are really for different purposes. If I want to make sure that a document looks exactly the way I intended it to, in Windows, Mac and Linux, and if I want to make it effectively read-only, I use PDF. Also, OpenOffice, the major cross-platform office suite, has awful RTF filters for some reason.

The main thing to remember here, though, is that I am on your side. :D
I don't want to see Atlantis trying to be all things to everyone. I want to see it keep its focus on doing what it does best, and doing that very well.

PDF 995

Post by spencero »

Max, per your suggestion, I tried PDF 995 and it worked very well.

Installation was easy and using it is simply a matter of clicking PRINT, choosing PDF 995, then clicking OK. It's as easy as printing a document.

There is no need for an integrated PDF printer in Atlantis when the free PDF 995 works just as well.

Actually, the Acrobat Reader is the most famous PDF reader for Windows, but there are many many PDF readers. In particular if you try some Linux distribution like Red Hat for example, you'll find that you don't need any additional programs to read PDFs - few PDF viewers are included in the distribution

I have no problems with creating .pdf files from Atlantis. Adobe Distiller and Adobe Acrobat is installed; so, I redirect printing task to Adobe PDF virtual printer.

Since the typical PDF creator is several megabytes in size,
and one of the (many) nice features of Atlantis is being a
slim product, I also believe PDF creation is a questionable
feature to add. I much prefer using a third-party software
if I need to create PDFs.

How big is the OpenOffice install file these days?
76+ megs? I know it has a complete suite of programs,
but sometimes things get just plain HUGE!

PDF creation

Post by verbose »

One of the oldest and biggest of WPs, the Rolls Royce of them all, is Nota Bene. It does everything, with panache and elegance and incredible functionality. It will index everything you've ever written and make it available via sophisticated search; it will write backwards in Hebrew and forwards in any other language on the same line. It will generate bibliographies in, say, Chicago style, then change it at the push of a key to, say, MLA or APA. Go to their website www.notabene.com, and drool!

For all this, NB recommends (and sells via its web site) an independent PDF generator: PDF Factory or PDF Factory Pro.

If this great program doesn't feel the need for a PDF creator, why should little Atlantis offer it? Not everyone needs NB $350 or $450 worth. But if they need PDF files, spring for a program that costs only a little more than Atlantis. If you really need a lot of PDF capacity, get Acrobat!

I used NB back in the DOS days but am not now doing the kind of work it excels at. I had a copy of MS Word that a client installed, and WordPerfect too, but have replaced those computers. Hence I was delighted to find Atlantis, which does so much and does it beautifully. So I agree with those who urge Atlantis not to add everything but keep it to what is most needed by most people, especially if it increases the size, kludges it up, or puts it out of most people's financial range.

Sincere kudos to Atlantis --

995

I don't know anything about 995 - but PDF Factory Pro does this job. You only have to tell the program which fonts should be used. That's absolutely no problem when using often the same templates

Old topic, I know, but seeing as in posting mode...

For my needs, there's no usefulness in having a "save to PDF" function as part of Atlantis.

Exactly the same is provided by the open-source PDF Creator recommended above (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator), which works perfectly these days, and has the advantage of being accessible from any program that you can print from. And of course it's free - a great piece of software.

There are other PDF viewer than Adobe reader.

If youy want there is a very tiny free and powerful pdf viewer: SumatraPDF. Incredible lightweight: less than 1.3Mb
It is an open source program.
You can find it here: http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sum ... index.html

Hi,
If you go to http://www.freepdfconvert.com/, you can upload documents created in Atlantis. They will be converted to the PDF format and sent to you by email. The TOCs included in the original documents are preserved in the PDF output. This free tool has restrictions: you can upload only one file every 30 minutes. For more, you need to register for a fee.
You might want to test this for yourself.
HTH.
Cheers,
Robert
