In Windows XP Pro I want to associate .doc and .rtf files with Atlantis. Currently, if I double-click either of these file types they open in Notepad. Selecting 'Open With' does not offer Atlantis as an option. I can associate these files with Wordpad, Notepad, Textmaker, or any number of other programs, but not with Atlantis.
If I browse to Atlantis.exe and select it, the dialog box goes away but Atlantis still does not show up on the list and the previous association has not changed.
I'm sure I'm missing something really simple but I'm not seeing it. Can you help?
Thanks,
Paul
File Associations
Admin & Robert,
Thanks for your swift replies. I checked the associations using Atlantis > Tools > File Associations as you suggested. Both file types of interest are already listed as associated. Double-clicking such a file in Windows Explorer just opens the file in Notepad. Repeated attempts to associate them with Atlantis in Windows have been unsuccessful. In short, it appears to be a Windows problem. Looks like I'll just have to use the tried and true method: open Atlantis first.
Thanks for your help anyway.
Best regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,
This is strange. Have you tried right-clicking a “.doc” file and choosing “Open With” from the menu? If you did, did you check the “Always use this program to open this type of file” option before closing that dialog?
Now if this did not help, here is a tip that might (from http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-11184- ... ID=2299703):
Cheers,
Robert

HTH.Registry edit for XPpro SP2 (possibly other versions) I have encountered the same issue, and have made an adjustment in the registry to solve it.
It is a really good idea to back up the registry before you make any changes....That being said, what I am suggesting as a fix will change the ability for power or administrative users of your XP machine to modify the 'global' file associations.
1. As the local adminsitrator on your PC, Run 'regedit' tool and dial down to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
2. right-click on the NoFileAssociate key, and select modify
3. edit the "Value data:" field to 0 (zero)and select OK.
4. the NoFileAssociate entry should now be:
"NoFileAssociate" "REG_DWORD" "0x00000000(0)"
5. Close the registry editor tool
6. You may need to logoff and log back in to see the changes. Then modify your file associations through the GUI as per usual. Your edit options should no longer be grayed out.
Cheers,
Robert
Hi Robert,
Yes I did use 'open with' but Atlantis did not appear in the list of candidates. When I browsed to Atlantis.exe and selected it that didn't work. Notepad still opened the file/s at double-click.
Here's an interesting wrinkle: I deliberately associated RTF files with Notepad and then navigated to Atlantis.exe with the 'open with> browse' dialog. Windows then changed the association from Notepad to Textmaker. Looks like the association was being hijacked (when Atlantis is able to handle tables I'll finally be able to get rid of Textmaker :) )
I think I may have fixed the problem though. I opened Atlantis > Tools > File Associations and disassociated the file types, closed Atlantis, opened it again and re-associated the files types. Now it works as advertised. Also Atlantis now appears in the 'open with' list.
I'll keep your registry trick in my back pocket in case the fix doesn't stick.

Paul
