Hi,
I finished my first .epub and reading it in iBooks for iPad. I attaching the file, well aware the you probably don´t understand Swedish;-) But you still can give me advice and reviews regarding layout, fonts and other things.
I got 2 questions:
1) I´m not happy with some of the page brakes in iBooks. How can I assure me that the page breaks will appear where I want them, i.e. keeping the paragraphs together.
2) Fonts I´m using Tahoma but it seems that iBooks don´t have that font, it has:
Georgia, Verdana, Palatino – witch of this fonts do you recommend?
Thanks in advance – any answer will be appreciated

Hi Peter,
We could help more if you posted the original RTF, DOC or DOCX document instead of the resulting EPUB file.
First, I would recommend inserting a Table Of Contents in your document. Some eReaders do not create a Table Of Contents automatically. You will make sure they display one if you insert it yourself in your original document. Please read the corresponding help topic at Table Of Contents.
Now the choice of font face is mainly a matter of personal taste. It is difficult to give advice on these matters. But I would personally advise you to choose fonts according to readability.
But if you absolutely want people to read your texts with their original fonts, check “Embed fonts” in the Atlantis “File | Save Special > Save As eBook…” dialog.
Please have a look at the following blog posts:

Regarding page breaks, the general recommendation is to leave most text as reflowable as possible, unless you want to force breaks in the flow of text. To break the flow of text, check “Page Break Before” in the properties of the paragraph that you want on a new page.
Please have a look at the following blog posts:

Peter,
I am sending a modified “basketregler1.rtf”. Note that I know nothing of the Swedish language. I might have made mistakes unwittingly! Also note that you had inserted quite a number of page breaks in the flow of text. I could not tell if these were actually required or not. It seemed there are too many of them. But you are the only one who knows.
Here is basically what I did:
I changed the “spacing before” value of the “Toc Title” style to “0”. I changed the Paragraph properties of the “TOC 1” style so that it had “0” “Spacing Before” and an “8pts” “Line Spacing”. I also used an “8pts” font size. This was to try to make sure that the TOC would display as a whole as much as possible (on a single page).
I reformatted the first “Heading 1” paragraph with the “Page Break Before” attribute.
I removed the now unnecessary manual page break that was located right above that first “Heading 1” paragraph.
I am not sure that the page break was required before “Var spelare och domare befinner sig:”, but I left it AS IS, except that I added the “page Break Before” attribute to it, and removed the manual page break above. I also removed the paragraph “spacing before” value. It seemed unnecessary to me.
Same operations regarding “Spelare i rörelse för målskott”, and all the other paragraphs that had a manual page break before them.
I also removed a number of empty paragraphs. If you want to create vertical spacing, use the paragraph properties (spacing before/after).
Have a look. See if this revised version displays as you intend it to.
HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

Hi Robert and thx for your time and effort
I´ll check out your revised version when I return home from work….
Some questions meanwhile:
1) I should use the “Page Break Before” attribute instead of manual page break?
2) I´ve difficulties with “line spacing” – where can I manually ajust the line space to what ever pts I like?

1) Yes, for various reasons, it is always preferable to use “Page Break Before” attributes instead of manual page breaks (even in RTF or DOCX documents). Applying the “Page Break Before” attribute to a paragraph will be as easy as ABC if you place the “Page Break Before” icon/command on your toolbars. You’ll find this icon if you click “Tools | Toolbars… > “Categories: All Commands”, click in the box below and type “p”.
2) Line spacing can be adjusted in the “Format | Paragraph…” dialog. But I suggest you stick to “single line” spacing unless you know exactly what you are doing. Instead adjust the font size.
