Open Document opens in Details mode

Post by franklinreid »

The Open Document (Ctrl+O) command, whether with the icon or File/Open always opens in List mode. I often use Windows Explorer to find files because I have it set to open in Details Mode. I can change it in Atlantis but I don't know how to make it permanent. I'm just re-setting it each time I open it. How can I set it to permanently open in Detail mode? Thanks :-)

I cannot reproduce this under Windows 7. "My" Atlantis does "remember" the view mode selected in the "Open document" window.

By the way, is your copy of Atlantis up-to-date? Please choose the "Help | Check for Updates..." menu command of Atlantis.

Admin,
Yes, I have the latest version: 1.6.5.10

I write books and have been using Microsoft Word since 1997 through 2003, it was the last version before they put in the ribbon at the top. I easily learned it in 2007 but it's such a nuisance to have all commands at the top. In 2003 I can still have them on all sides, if I wish. But rather than continue to buy expensive upgrades I went looking for a different solution. I tried four different programs some free, some at cost, and settled on Atlantis. And it was a very good choice. I do all my work in it and love it. It lacks a few things but I can live with it and for just straight writing, it can't be beat. All the tools (yes, at the top, I know <go figure> 8-} ) that I used in Word have easier access and they work better and simpler. I especially like the styles settings and controls. Very good! Oh, and the Backup tools are also great, giving me a version backup much better than Word.

My books are (very boring) non-fiction religious and history, and I like to work with several files open at the same time. As mentioned earlier, when I open the first one for the day (I don't use the Recent Documents list) I click on the File Open icon. Then I have to change the view setting to Details. I want to see the file size and the date & time stamp. After I select a file and it opens, I go get another file and have to change the setting again. I do this with each file open step. What can I do to set it to always open in Details mode?

Hmmm, I just discovered another little quirk. In writing this message I wanted to go back and place an emoticon in an earlier location. When I clicked to indicate the cursor position, then clicked on the icon it went to the end of the text instead of where I wanted it. I tried it three times and got the same result (What's that definition of "stupidity?") Anyway, the only way I can place an emoticon earlier in the text is to think of it earlier, copy and paste it where needed, or just type it the old way like this: 8-). Well, that didn't turn out like I wanted either. I wear glasses and have been using emoticon since the DOS days. Now I see that my typed code gave me the guy with shades. Oh well, nothing in this life is perfect. :D

Are you launching Atlantis with some command-line parameter(s) like this:

Code: Select all

Atlantis.exe /lsi /ssi /sfn "D:\My Settings.ini"

Nope! I have Win 7 and Atlantis is pinned to the taskbar. I just one-click it to bring it up. This is not new. I've been doing it this way for a couple of years. It only changed when I upgraded to version 1.6.5.9 and later.
Your questions indicate you are mystified and don't have a fix. I will just continue as I am, I'm not going to give up my Atlantis just because of a quirk on this computer. (smile)

Just to clarify what I'm experiencing...
This is the first time in the morning after turning on the the desktop computer. When I open Atlantis I have it set to open the Normal.rtf file so later I will have a place to Paste if needed. Then I click on the Open File icon and find the document I want to work on. I see that it remembered how I had it set the day before, in Details mode. When the file is open in the text area, then I want to repeat this by opening another file so I click on the File Open icon again. This time the Open File window did NOT remember how it was set a moment ago. Now I have to set it to Details before selecting the second file. This is the way it remains when I go for a third or fourth document. I have to change the mode every time after the first time.
Strangely enough, when I try this on my Win XP machine it ALWAYS remembers the mode. Hmmm.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for you help.

Hi,
Please have a look at this address:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 0831512a3a

Here are the relevant bits:
Default view for File Open dialogs
Is there a way to set the List view option as the default for all of my File Open dialogs (all programs) in Windows 7? Mine is always the Details view, which tends to make for a lot of scrolling to find the file or folder I need.

What helped me was pressing the right mouse button on the drive(s) in the left pane of the dialog (where "Favorites", "Libraries" and "Computer" is displayed). Here, select "Properties". In the Properties window, switch to the "Customize" tab. Set "Optimize this folder for" to "General Items" and check the "Also apply this template to all subfolders". Then press OK.
Seems that this puts all the views of the subfolders to a details view.

I found your response to be very helpful - my preference is the opposite. I prefer "Details" to be displayed, but it kept defaulting to "list". I'm using Vista, and the comparable steps are slightly different:
Right click on a folder in the left pane of the Open files dialogue box
Select Properties, then Customize, then in drop-down for Type of Folder select "all Items"
Apply to all subfolders, then OK.
I never would have gotten there without your response.
HTH.
Cheers,
Robert
