My latest book, "Finding New Jerusalem", was written entirely with Atlantis instead of Word. There were a few workarounds that needed to be done but the basic writing and using all the tools there, so handy, made it so much easier to accomplish. And the file sizes are so small by comparison. I had been writing articles and Facebook comments using Atlantis but I made the decision to write this entire book with it. What a great program!
Now I'm already into my next one.

Franklin,
I am an advocate of using Atlantis for ebook production. (I am also a very big advocate of producing ebooks in general instead of having to deal with traditional hard-copy publishers, but that is a different issue.)
Could you elaborate on any problems that you encountered? You mentioned some workarounds that you had to use.
Also, could you tell us something about the Amazon process? Did you submit a .doc file, or exactly what? Or were you able to submit your own Kindle-format file?
Any details would be appreciated.

Hi,
You’ll find detailed information on how to submit eBook to the Kindle Store straight from the horse's mouth at the following addresses:
Welcome to Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing
Getting Started - How to Publish
Types of Formats
And also from How to Submit Your eBook to Kindle
Note that Atlantis can convert your EPUB file to the native Amazon MOBI format. You’ll find all necessary explanations in the Atlantis Help at Converting to Kindle
HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

Thanks for the links, Robert.
I do not have anything to publish right now, but I have some plans. And I have read the Smashwords manual several times. Mainly I was hoping that I could provide my own .mobi/.azw or whatever for Amazon instead of having to go through Amazon's own conversion process. I am a knowledgeable computer user and editor. I really did not want to leave my formatting at the mercy of Amazon.

When Atlantis creates the MOBI files, it uses the official Amazon KindleGen utility in the background. So these MOBI files are perfectly compliant with Amazon’s own conversion requirements.
Note that you can convert the EPUB files created by Atlantis to the MOBI format manually yourself. You only need to open any EPUB file created by Atlantis in the Kindle Previewer: your EPUB file will automatically be converted to the MOBI format, and will display in the Kindle Previewer as it would in the various Kindle devices. The Kindle Previewer is available from Amazon at Kindle Previewer.

I have been using the Amazon Previewer for a long time, since I sometimes have an epub file that I want to convert to Kindle format.
