Format palette disappears when I upgrade

Post by luha »

I have recently updated to Version 1.6.6.2 - and all information in my format palette disappeared and was replaced with the standard content. I have a backup copy of my old version. I thought I could load the old settings from my backup .ini file, but to no avail. What can I do to keep my old settings when I update?

Hi Luha,
Your “backup .ini” file needs to have been saved with the latest entries in your customized Format Palette. If this wasn’t the case, you will only be able to restore whatever was stored in your Format Palette when you created that “backup .ini” file.
Note that the Atlantis current customized configuration must be saved using the “Save to File…” button as found at the bottom of the “Tools | Options…” dialog.
And any such stored configuration must be restored through the “Load from File…” button as found at the bottom of the “Tools | Options…” dialog.

As a precautionary measure, you should always save your current customized configuration before you update Atlantis.

I have restored Atlantis from the backup. It is version 1.6.5.8 beta b2. (I am on holiday. I may have a newer backup at home) The format palette is now just like I want it.
I go to Tools|Options…|Save to file… and save Atlantis.ini to my desktop. I can recognize my format palette entries at the end of this file.
I click Help|Check for updates. A new build - 1.6.6.2 is available.
I update. The format palette is the standard one.
I click Tools|Options…|Load from file… Atlantis restarts - with the standard format palette.

Luha,
A personal tip. Whenever you save an Atlantis customized configuration, use the “Save to File…” button as found at the bottom of the “Tools | Options…” dialog, and name/rename the resulting INI file anything except “Atlantis.ini”. In other words, name any customized configuration file as “My Atlantis.ini”, or “Luha’s Atlantis.ini”, or anything except “Atlantis.ini”.
This is because “Atlantis.ini” is the default name for the Atlantis default configuration (its “factory settings”).
Here are the steps to restore your Atlantis customized palette (and configuration):
1. Restore Atlantis from the 1.6.5.8 beta b2 backup as you already did.
2. Open this 1.6.5.8 beta b2 version of Atlantis.
3. Use the “Save to File…” button as found at the bottom of the “Tools | Options…” dialog, and save the INI configuration file as “My Atlantis.ini”, or “Luha’s Atlantis.ini”. Do not save that configuration file as “Atlantis.ini”.
4. Click “Help | Check for updates…”
5. When version 1.6.6.2 has been installed, use the “Load from File…” button as found at the bottom of the “Tools | Options…” dialog, and direct Atlantis to the saved configuration file (“My Atlantis.ini”, or “Luha’s Atlantis.ini”, for example). Do not use any “Atlantis.ini” configuration file.

Thank you! But I cannot understand that the file name should make any difference, as long as it is stored in my desktop; not in the Atlantis folder.
I tried to follow your instructions. It did not work.

I am not sure if it should make any difference or not, but try storing the Atlantis configuration files in “C:\Users\<User’s Name>\Documents\Atlantis\”. This is their default (factory) location. So you should have “C:\Users\<User’s Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Atlantis.ini”, and, for example, “C:\Users\<User’s Name>\Documents\Atlantis\My Atlantis.ini”.
To restore your customized settings, use any available “My Atlantis.ini” file.
Now, you wrote “I can recognize my format palette entries at the end of this file.”
If these are really your own customized Format Palette entries, here is what you could try:
1. Open the INI file containing your own customized Format Palette entries in any pure text editor like Windows Notepad or, for example, Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/).
2. Copy all the text stored at the end of that file under “[\Software\Atlantis Word Processor\FormatPalette]”.
3. Open the INI file that you saved as “My Atlantis.ini” in Notepad and paste the Windows Clipboard contents at the end of that file, again under “[\Software\Atlantis Word Processor\FormatPalette]”. Save your changes.
4. Open Atlantis 1.6.6.2 and use the “Load from File…” button as found at the bottom of the “Tools | Options…” dialog to direct Atlantis to “My Atlantis.ini”. Press the “Open” button to close the “Load Settings from File” dialog.

Your Format Palette should have been restored.

If this isn’t the case, it might be because you are launching Atlantis with some special command-line parameters. Please right-click the icon that you use to launch Atlantis on your system. Choose “Properties” from the menu. What exactly is the “target” of that icon? Does it read as “C:\Program Files\Atlantis” or something more complex?

I have the files “C:\Users\<User’s Name>\Documents\Atlantis\” and “C:\Users\<User’s Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Atlantis.ini”.
I tried to copy the contents of the My Atlantis.ini file into the Atlantis.ini file.
My Format Palette has not been restored.

I start Atlantis with "C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Atlantis.exe". I read in another thread that Atlantis uses the information from the registry when it is installed on a computer, so I tried to start it with "C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Atlantis.exe" -lsi.
My Format Palette has not been restored.

I fear I must build the Format Palette again - or stay with the old version of Atlantis.

Could you please try launching Atlantis with the following command-line:

"C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Atlantis.exe" /lsi /sfn "C:\Users\<User’s Name>\Documents\Atlantis\My Atlantis.ini"

Of course, "My Atlantis.ini" must be the file with your customized Format Palette, and must be located in "C:\Users\<User’s Name>\Documents\Atlantis\"

If there aren’t privacy concerns, could you please post your configuration file with proper Format Palette entries, i.e. "My Atlantis.ini"?
Alternatively, you could send it to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com.

I have no privacy concerns about this file. (I was not permitted to post an .ini-file to the forum, so I have renamed it My Atlantis.txt.)
Thank you for your time!

Thanks for your file.
On careful examination, it turned out that your “customized” file includes settings that are the same as those meant for the default Format Palette. So it is no wonder that these settings produce the same Palette.
You need to find an INI file containing truly customized settings…
Here is what you could do:
1. Restore Atlantis version 1.6.5.8 beta b2 from your backup.
2. Open this Atlantis version 1.6.5.8 beta b2. Check that the Format Palette being displayed is truly your own customized palette.
3. Click “Tools | Options… > Save to file…”, and save the INI file as “My Atlantis.ini”.
4. Post this “My Atlantis.ini” file on this forum.
5. Update to Atlantis version 1.6.6.2.
6. Click “Tools | Options… > Load from file…”, and use the INI file that you saved as “My Atlantis.ini” in step 3 above.

What about the Format Palette? Doers it look in any way different from the default palette?

luha, your INI file is meant for a too old version of Atlantis. It is not supported by the latest version of Atlantis. Why did not you update your copy of Atlantis for 3 years?

Like I said, I was on a holiday, and after I upgraded (and the format palette disappeared) all I could find that worked the way I wanted was an old backup copy.
I am back on my home computer now, and here the upgrade does not erase the format palette. Problem solved. Sorry for all the trouble, and thank you for your time!
