A Searching Question

Post by Redrover »

I select a block of text in a large document and call the search/replace function. With the search scope radio buttons set to restrict the search to the selected text I enter a word to find and click 'Find Next'. Atlantis searches beyond the boundary of the selected text and searches the entire document.

The 'Find and Select All', however, behaves as I would expect, restricting itself to searching only the selected text.

Is this how Atlantis is supposed to work or am I not understanding the nature of the beast?

Paul

Hi Redrover,
When Atlantis has found all instances of the search string within a selection, it normally pops a message up saying “No (other) instance of the search item could be found”. Of course, this message implicitly says “No (other) instance of the search item could be found within the current selection”.
Now if you press the “OK” button to close that pop-up, Atlantis will naturally consider that you have been informed that the selection contained no more of the search string.
Following that, if you press the “Next” button again in the Find dialog instead of closing it, Atlantis will assume that you want to search the remainder of the document.
Note that the Find dialog displays “searching selection” as a caption as long as it searches the selection. When you have closed the pop-up message warning you that the search was complete, the “searching selection” caption is removed. This means that any further search will happen in the whole document.
HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the explanation of how the search function is supposed to work.

It's not exactly what I'm seeing though. I select a block of text in a larger document. Let's say there is only one instance of the word I'm looking for in the selected block. I click 'Find Next' and Atlantis will find that word. I click 'Find Next' again and Atlantis will remain on that word in that position with no messages to indicate that no other instances were found. It just goes round and round on the same word.

If there are no instances of the looked for word in the marked block then Atlantis jumps immediately outside the marked text and displays the message 'Searching Document Remainder'.

The Find/Replace commands of Atlantis might display various optional confirmation messages that can be disabled with a default answer. Have you ever clicked the "Do not ask again" box in message dialogs of Atlantis:

Please choose the "Tools | Options..." menu command of Atlantis, click the "Optional Messages..." button on the "General" tab, and make sure that the following optional messages are enabled (checked) in your Atlantis:

You're absolutely right. Those boxes were unchecked.

I looked at a couple of other popular word processors, and you know what? They don't even have the option to search selected text. Atlantis wins again.

As always, thanks for your timely responses.
