WINE

Post by Colorwheel »

Hello, first post!

Atlantis Nova user from long ago when I had Windows, and now with Linux for years.

To the poster: using a compatibility layer (the most common being WINE, I use 1.4 and 1.5) allows both Atlantis and Atlantis Nova to work flawlessly on Linux. I installed both today having never tried the full version. It's truly stunning!

I really missed having Nova. In the FOSS world there are no substitutes for it, so I am happy to say that it works just as quickly and efficiently on Ubuntu (and my guess would be any modern distro perfectly).

Installation issue smaller screens on WINE and workaround

Post by Colorwheel »

I figure since I work in Linux and am a Nova addict I will assist readers who share that preference.

For those who prefer using Atlantis and have Linux, I've discovered a minor flaw in WINE that's easily fixed: on smaller screens (such as a netbook), the installation screen will come up, but the menu items won't appear so in some cases, installation can't proceed.

This can be solved easily by going to "Configure WINE" (or "winecfg" in terminal) and choosing the "Graphics" tab. Check off the "Emulate a virtual desktop" option and make it smaller than your screen. The installer will run flawlessly in a window; then go back into configuration for Wine and uncheck the box.

Thanks for your hints!

But, where tot put the maps 'Templates', 'Clip Library' , etcetera?
And: how to install a fresh Atlantis in Linux (Ubuntu)?

Thanks for your answers.

Hi “Colorwheel”,
Yes, could you please provide detailed instructions on how to install Atlantis on a Linux Ubuntu system? If possible with screen captures, maybe a complete video tutorial?
This could be posted permanently on the Atlantis site.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Robert

Sure, give me a day or so. Screen captures are easy for me; not very video-capable an individual.

WINE creates a virtual "C:" drive, so that could be used if you want to place your templates there. Otherwise the existing templates are in that virtual drive. I know that when you save files, you have the option of going to the "C:" or defaulting to your choice of folder, which remains after you restart Atlantis Nova.

Definitely will be glad do the tutorial.

I think it's too difficult to set up on Linux. I've tried for days with no luck. Does anyone know a step by step tutorial?

Atlantis 2.0.5.0 runs on Linux Mint 17.3 with WINE

Post by Aitch748 »

For what it's worth, I can confirm that Atlantis 2.0.5.0 runs fine on Linux Mint 17.3 (using the version of Wine that comes on that system's Software Update utility). I didn't reinstall Atlantis from the website; in Windows, I used Atlantis's "Install to Removable Drive" option on the Tools menu to copy Atlantis onto a thumb drive, then I copied the Atlantis folder from my thumb drive onto my home folder on a Linux laptop, then I right-clicked the awp.exe file and selected "Open with WINE." Then I could double-click awp.exe and Atlantis opened right up in Linux.

All versions of Atlantis Word Processor from 3.1 to 3.2.13.5 (inclusively) will not run under Wine. Any next release of Atlantis will be compatible with Wine, and you could run Atlantis under Linux.

One more question on Linux:

I am able to print a normal document to a printer without issue, but when I try to print an envelope I get this error:

Exception: Access Violation At 0044C723 in awp.exe

Is there any possibility that might be fixable?

Thank you!!!

Outstanding! Thank you!

Linux seems to have very few viable Envelope-printing utilities. This is another area, in addition to ebook production and overall great word processing with Word compatibility that Atlantis should appeal to linux users.

Libreoffice is abysmal for envelopes/address books, and neither WPS office or Softmaker office seem to be much better.
