Inserting Page Breaks from Insert Menu?

Post by just2write »

Regarding inserting page breaks for ebooks, it is said that with MS Word one should not use insert page break from the "Insert Menu", but should go by way of MS Styles.

I was thinking that with Atlantis being such a clever little dickens ebook-wise, it might be okay to use page breaks from the Insert Menu. Any thoughts?

Hi Rom,
As a general rule, it is always preferable to use so-called “styled” formatting in word processors. This makes changes easier and more predictable throughout the whole document.
This said, you can insert page breaks using direct (or “manual”) formatting.
The most obvious (and admittedly, laziest) way is through “Ctrl+Enter”. This is already more practical than going through the hoops of “Insert | Break > Page Break”. But this should be avoided. Here is from Managing pagination:
The worst way to manage pagination is to do Insert > Page Break (Figure 1). This puts a “hard” page break in your document. It can sometimes get caught up in a heading or a cross-reference, which will break your table of contents or cross-references. And it makes it hard when you add or remove text above the page break and you have to move it.
So there is a better way. It is through the “Page break before” property on the “Line & Page Breaks” tab in the “Format | Paragraph…” dialog:

If you often use this paragraph property, and still use direct manual formatting, you can press the dedicated toolbar button to activate this option directly:

As you can see, when the “Page break before” property is active for a paragraph, the associated toolbar button is showing a different hue. You can easily tell if the property is on or not.

Finally, note that the “Page break before” attribute can be activated for all the paragraphs associated with a given style. This is styled formatting at its best.

HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

P.S.: Since Atlantis cannot open and modify EPUB files directly, it is advisable to keep the source documents of your EPUB files. These RTF, DOC or DOCX files can easily be modified in Atlantis, then resaved to EPUB. Making changes to the source documents will be a lot easier if they have been properly “styled”.
