What happened to the Help File?

Post by writenow »

I'm using a relatively new computer and Atlantis version 1.6.6.5. Today, I had occasion to open the Help File. To my surprise no Help File exists. I had one on the old computer. Thinking I must have to download it, I went to the download page but didn't find one there.

What can I do?

Yes. I found the online help. I was very much hoping to find out that I could download a help file. Is online all that's available now? If so . . . that really sucks.

In their infinite and absolute wisdom, the Atlantis developers have decided to remove all localized offline help from Atlantis. If you ask for help offline from within the Atlantis GUI, you are now automatically taken to the online help. Note that the same is happening in MS Word and a number of “modern” applications. This follows current trends…
Now if you had read the thread at Online Help carefully enough, you’d have noticed that thanks to Jesse, a loyal Atlantis user, a localized offline version of the Atlantis Help can be downloaded from Atlantis Help v1.6.6.5.zip. You only need to unzip it, place it in any suitable folder on your system, and create a shortcut to, for example, “C:\Users\<User Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Atlantis Help\index.html”. This file will automatically open offline in your default browser and give you offline access to all the current Atlantis Help.

Haha. While I disagree with the "infinite and absolute wisdom" assessment - I mislike Word and the trend to push everything and everyone to do everything online - your post was "absolutely" helpful and I thank you for that.

No, I didn't find anything about downloading a .zip file. Atlantis user Jesse's efforts should be lauded. However, I don't think this solution will work for me, but I will give it a try. I suspect I will have to revert to my old version of Atlantis, or after lo these many years, say a very sad farewell.

Thanks again for your help.

I meant “infinite and absolute wisdom” tongue-in-cheek…
This said, you should not throw the baby out with the bath water. Atlantis 2.0 is currently making great strides. It will include many improvements and above all support for tables. The Atlantis table feature will be a lot more practical than the corresponding implementations found in the currently available word processors, including the most famous of them.

:) I really do appreciate your comments.

I've worked around Atlantis' lack of tables - by using other word processors - for so long, I just can't get very excited by their addition at this late date. I'd a whole lot rather have a good help file that doesn't require a browser than tables.

Atlantis has been my go-to word processor for many years because it does have many great features. I won't throw it out with the bath water, it will probably just drain away as I move on to something that doesn't require using a browser.

Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone,

I made a .chm help file for Atlantis, based on the online help files. Important: this help file is based on the current (as of time of posting) Atlantis help files that include description of the Tables feature and so pertains to version 2.0.0.0 of Atlantis.

Like Jesse, I used WinHTTrack to download the help pages and their structure, but then used WinCHM Pro to create the help file (.chm).

I tested the help file and everything seems to be working well, but if anyone sees a problem let me know and I'll fix it. The help file isn't *perfect* but I think it's pretty usable. I further edited the pages a bit (removed bottom page bars, etc.) and sought to consolidate all links to internal files, so that they don't open online pages. The only exceptions are links to the download page, subscribe page, and also links to the videos (which can play inside the help file -- although requiring internet connection, of course). I attempted to make the help file structure identical to the online help so it should be pretty similar in use. Instead of maintaining the left pane links as shown in online help, I used the .chm parent and child structure in the left nav pane to achieve that. I only left the "Content" and "Search" tabs in the help file, so you perform word-searches and find related content that way.

Download Atlantis Help: http://www.mediafire.com/download/qgu0n ... s_Help.chm

Note: The Atlantis online help files are, of course, to be considered as perpetually up-to-date, whereas any offline help file such as the one offered in this post will only be a snapshot in time of the Atlantis help files. I may, time permitting, update the help file in the future, at least for personal use; if anyone thinks it requires an update contact me via PM as I have saved the WinCHM template and help files so it would be pretty easy to update.

Besides making Atlantis Help, I also downloaded the Quick Tour and Screenshot Gallery pages and made them into one .chm file. It wouldn't be of use to experienced Atlantis users, but perhaps it can come in handy to show people some of the Atlantis features. Download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/b97sz ... allery.chm

The Atlantis Team is probably not *thrilled* that I'm posting this help file, but it's just an amateur trying to share what took him hours to make and what people have asked for and what I personally have wanted. So it's by no means an official release, just one user trying to help (pun intended) :D

Hi patr,

Just as a note, there are certain help pages (like AutoCorrect options, and the Symbols & Characters Dialog) that are not accessible via the Table of Contents, and thus won't be mirrored by httrack by default. You can add them to the root URL list to get a copy. The ones I've find so far are

http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en ... symbol.htm
http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en ... orrect.htm
http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en ... ptions.htm

If you find any more (by hitting Help from within Atlantis, please post them here so I can update my records too!

Best,
Jesse
