Greetings--
Could you please be more specific?
What kind of text or document is it?
Which "preview" do you mean (which command)?
Which Windows system are you running?
How much memory have you got?

Terry-- Do you have a printer installed? If there isn't a printer installed in your system you will get an error when entering print preview or changing the document margins. Even if you don't have a printer you can still install a generic printer driver.

Greetings--
BuffyBot is right. Word processors need to find a printer installed to be able to define specific margins.
Even if you haven't got a real printer, you can install a printer under Windows. Simply follow the standard procedure, and when you are asked which printer you want to install, choose any printer from the list of supported printers. Choose one that you'd like to buy for example. Of course, you won't be able to print anything but word processors will be able to ask the printer driver for margin specifics.
Note that installing a Generic/Text Only printer driver is not always enough.
